Health and well-being
Sun, snow, fresh air, rest... Lionel Porte, mountain doctor, explains why skiing in spring is so good for you. For your body and your mind!
Enjoying a holiday in the mountains in spring is a source of multiple benefits.
First of all, physically, doing sport strengthens the bones, stimulates the cardiovascular system and helps to transform ‘fat’ into muscle. The abundance of sunshine after a winter period stimulates the use of vitamin D and therefore fixes calcium in the bones. What's more, a stay at altitude boosts the production of red blood cells for better tissue oxygenation.
From a psychological point of view, the abundance of light in the snow helps to break the winter blues, a process known as luminotherapy. According to studies, this excess of light makes spring holidaymakers feel more relaxed.
Children, parents, grandparents: ski together in spring
The cold and heavy snowfalls of the winter months make spring a great time to learn to ski and spend days on the slopes with your family. The days are longer, with better visibility and real quality snow. The slopes are less crowded, making for more relaxed, cooler skiing. And what's more, the pleasure of skiing in the sunshine, with temperatures less cold than in February, makes spring an ideal time of year.
Spring: time for a whole host of activities
Longer days mean plenty to discover and lots to do in the snow. This time of year, there's something for everyone... sporty or less sporty. For those who like to get moving, cross-country skiing and ski touring, which are very demanding from a cardio-respiratory point of view, are excellent ways to burn off some energy. Afternoons at the spa or swimming pool will delight those looking for peace and relaxation. As a family, dog-sledding, snowshoeing or even mountain biking are ideal!
Preserving the benefits of spring skiing
Having spent a holiday in beautiful snow and sunshine conditions leaves you with fond memories and a more positive, calmer mood. The psychological benefits will remain as long as you keep on walking and getting fresh air when you get back home. The important thing is to keep up the momentum and positivity so that you can continue to feel good in your everyday life. A week's sports holiday can be the best start to a sports season.
