Nordic walking is attracting more and more of a following.  More than a simple cross between traditional hiking and running, Nordic walking is a concept of well being that some go so far as to qualify as revolutionary.  Discover Nordic walking on your next mountain holiday!

What is Nordic walking?

It all started a dozen or so years ago in the forests of Finland, when cross-country skiers, looking to continue their training throughout the summer, took to the trails with their ski poles.  The public readily adopted the sport, which is easy on the joints while stimulating the cardiovascular system.  The passion for the sauvakävely (the Finnish term for Nordic walking) quickly grew, spreading throughout Europe, to the United States and Japan, promoted by stars such as Madonna.

Nordic walking poles are longer than those used for traditional walking or hiking (about the length of cross-country ski poles.)  Poles are normally made from carbon fibre or composite materials, for flexibility and resistance.  They are equipped with a hand strap or cuff with a Velcro closure that wraps around the hand and allows the pole to follow the movement of the arm without tensing the fingers.  The stride lengthens, the effort is felt in the arms, and one can clearly feel the effect of propulsion.  Not only can one move more quickly, the poles also redistribute weight throughout the legs and arms, easing the pressure on the ankles, knees, hips and lower back.  The sensation is that of speed and lightness.

Walking for health

Nordic walking is perfect for overall well being.  It gives a workout to the cardiovascular system and improves circulation of blood and oxygen to the muscles.  It is also excellent for toning the figure, as nearly 85 percent of the body’s muscles are used, without the risk of straining the joints.  Finally, Nordic walking is excellent for weight loss, requiring 40 percent more energy than traditional hiking.  It also reduces stress.  This exercise is recommended for all ages.  For youth, it is excellent athletic training, and, for the elderly, it prevents osteoporosis and strengthens the spine.  Even pregnant women can experience the benefits of Nordic walking.

Fun and fitness

Nordic walking poles allow you to descend quickly, with a slight jumping motion, or to climb easily over boulders.  They bring an element of excitement to an ordinary walk for children.  The motion of hiking becomes lighter and more fluid.  It is a pleasure right from the start, a combination of gentle physical effort and mental relaxation.  Enjoyable, as well as being good for your health, it is difficult to resist the Nordic mania…
