2011 Mountain activities

Practiced by 1.5 million in France and accessible to everyone, hiking is an activity that awakens the senses.  The perfect activity for contemplation and reinvigoration, at times an effort but always a pleasure, hiking is a gateway to well-being.

Practiced by 1.5 million in France and accessible to everyone, hiking is an activity that awakens the senses.  The perfect activity for contemplation and reinvigoration, at times an effort but always a pleasure, hiking is a gateway to well-being.

With a wealth of marked trails and landscapes among the most beautiful in Europe (such as Mont Blanc, les Ecrins, the cirque de Gavarnie, and the volcanoes of Auvergne, among others), the French mountains are paradise for hikers.  Gaze out over a valley from a mountain peak, discover exceptional natural sites, experience the excitement of going off the beaten trail, picnic on a summit looking out to the horizon...new discoveries and a sense of well-being will accompany you at every step of your journey.  There is no need to be an athlete to appreciate the pleasures of hiking.  Some enjoy setting challenges and pushing their limits, but hiking is appropriate for all ages and all fitness levels.  One can easily access the summits with the chairlifts and descend gently into to the valley on foot.

To get the most from your hiking experience, pack a guidebook to explain the flora and fauna of the mountains.  In numerous mountain stations, discovery trails have been created which are accessible to all, notably the youngest hikers.
