If you like the mountains and you like films, you’ll love watching these, made at least in part, if not entirely, in the mountains; you might even recognise some of the locations. The mountains are the perfect place to make a film, with such a range of atmospheres: oppressive for a thriller, bucolic for a more contemplative film or simply magnificent thanks to the stunning backdrop…Action!

Our Kind of Traitor

Marrakech, Bern, Paris, London…and Pralognan-la Vanoise in the French Alps were all locations for this 2016 British spy film. Featuring Ewan Mc Gregor, the film tells a tale of money laundering and the Russian mafia.

Due to the political tensions and instability in Kashmir, Bollywood film crews can often be found filming dancing and singing scenes in the Alps. The pure water and green pastures add a mythical, dream-like and highly visual element to the film for Indian viewers.

JAMES BOND TITBITS

The trailor for the 1997 «Tomorrow Never Dies» was filmed on the altiport in Peyragudes.

Candice Gilg, French ski champion from 1995 to 1997 and currently tourist office director in Combloux, was Sophie Marceau’s body double in «The world is not enough».

Force Majeure

Sweden’s most highly awarded film ever (winning the Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section in 2014) offers a clever observational look into family relationships. Filmed in Les Arcs, producer Ruben Ostlund began his brilliant career producing freeride skiing films. Going back to the mountains, after a number of city-based films, was a breath of fresh air for him.

Children from the Ski Club in Les Arcs were used as body doubles for the two children in the film and skiing scenes are carried out by resort locals.

The start of the film offers views of les Arcs just beneath Mont Blanc; impressive editing that led the producer to say: «Don’t believe everything you see in films!».

The production company who carried out the filming in France was also behind the internationally acclaimed TV series, Les Revenants, part of which was filmed in Tignes and in the Haute-Savoie region.
