Ice Sculpture
Sometimes a walk through the ski resort can hold unexpected surprises ! You may cross oversized animals, meticulously chiseled carriages, fantastic flowers…created by virtuosos of the chainsaw and the ice pick, these ice sculptures will enchant the whole family.
An ancient art born in China, ice sculpting is a link to the dream world. From an anonymous block of ice, artists bring forth original creations which come to life under a spotlight or before the flicker of a candle.
You will be rendered speechless by the size of the sculptures, the precision of the lines, and the variety of patterns imagined by the artists. In spite of the apparent fragility of the material, anything is possible. Seeing the finished works is a pure delight, but watching the artists at work also merits more than just a glance ! Operating chainsaws with rare dexterity, handling the other tools of the trade with precision, these virtuosos offer a performance that goes straight to the heart, and will captivate the whole family.
The world’s largest ice sculpture event is held in Harbin, in the Manchu birthplace of this ancient art, but the largest european event is in France. In Valloire, for over 20 years, (the 23rd edition took place from the 20th to the 23rd of january) the best ice sculptors come together to exhibit their talents. Under the watchful eyes of the public, a battle of ingenuity takes place to determine who can create the most spectacular work, the results of which seem nearly to defy the laws of physics !
In the evening, a stroll among the lighted sculptures is a truly unforgettable experience. The discovery of this magnificent art form which will leave behind just one regret : the knowledge that the works are ephemeral. But does that not render them even more exceptional ?
