It's decided: this year, you will spend your well-deserved vacation in the mountains, for the first time.  For a successful vacation, here are a few pieces of helpful advice for planning and taking advantage of all the mountains have to offer.

The French mountains are the ideal destination for a winter break, offering limitless possibilities and personalised options.  But once your decision is made, our first piece of advice is to think ahead.  Careful planning and preparation is the key to a successful vacation.

Choose the right resort
All of the French ski resorts have their qualities, but each one is different.  Therefore, give careful consideration to what an ideal holiday means for you, and choose your destination accordingly.  For example, for experienced skiers, the quality of the skiing is the principal motivation for a mountain holiday, and the size and technical difficulty of the terrain are important considerations. For beginners who come to enjoy a relaxing family vacation while making a few rounds on the slopes each day, these elements are less important. The mountains have many pleasures to offer aside from skiing, such as snowshoeing, a trip to the spa, a meal at a fine restaurant or an afternoon of shopping.  For a successful family vacation, the wishes of both parents and children should be taken into consideration.  Among the many resorts listed on our site, you will find those which offer daycare facilities, initiation courses, evening entertainment, cinemas…take care in your selection to find the perfect station to fit your needs.

Insurance and Accommodation
Evidently, your budget is among the most important factors when choosing your holiday accommodation.  Apartment rental, or holiday residence?  Hotel or chalet?  Do you prefer to be surrounded by nature, or in the heart of the resort in order to take advantage of the nightlife ?  Book as early as possible for maximum choice, and even preferential pricing including « Early Booking » specials (see interview).

Before you go, confirm that your insurance covers winter sports, and contact your bank or insurance agent if necessary for temporary holiday insurance. Proper insurance allows you to travel with peace of mind.

Equipment and fitness level

Before setting off for the mountains, think about your equipment.  Protective sunglasses or ski goggles, warm, waterproof clothing, gloves…a day outdoors can easily lose its charm due to cold or humidity if one is not properly prepared, and young children are especially sensitive to the elements.  Opt for high-quality equipment, whether you rent or buy.  Improper bindings or equipment that is not your size can quickly take the fun out of skiing.  Even if you are not planning to hit the slopes, the mountains can put your body to the test.  Prepare yourself by swimming, walking, cycling, even taking the stairs instead of the lift…your body will thank you for it.  Being physically prepared will help you avoid injury.  If you are planning to ski, a quick warm-up in the morning before you go can be the saving grace for your joints and muscles.  Finally, consider a few ski courses in order to learn the basics and allow youself to experience all the French mountains have to offer!
