2011 Advice and tips

If you use your own equipment, have it verified by a specialist before leaving for your holiday.  Bindings in good condition, edges sharp, midsections waxed.  You will be sure to hit the slopes on the right foot and have peace of mind as you ski.  And if you don’t have time before you leave, don’t worry – sports shops in all the resorts have what it takes to look after your equipment.

1. Have your equipment checked

2. Don’t forget anything

Equipment (skis, poles, bindings, ski helmet) sledge, camera, snow boots, warm clothes, gloves, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and even swimsuits…Project yourself into all the different situations in which you may find yourself and make a list of what you will need.  In case of an oversight, know that in the resorts, anything can be rented – even ski clothing.

3. Bring the right clothing

In can get cold in the mountains !  Prepare yourself accordingly : warm ski clothing, gloves, hats, leggings – be careful not to forget anything.  Pay attention – your clothing must also be breathable.  In the sun, during physical activity, one can quickly overheat.  Finally, bring a good pair of  boots in order to keep your feet dry during your walks in the snow !

4. Protect yourself from the sun

At high altitude, with the reflection off the snow, the sun is very strong.  Protect yourself with UV blocking sunglasses and a sunscreen with high UV protection.  Reapply sunscreen regularly – this applies to adults as well as children.

5. Have all the necessary documents

Vacations are planned in advance and often booked online.  Don’t forget your vouchers (passes, accommodation, equipment.) Think of bringing along proof of age for the kids, which may allow you to take advantage of reduced prices.

6. Plan your journey

Before leaving, make sure that your vehicle is prepared to face the cold, and to drive on snowy roads.  Think of putting on snow tyres or equipping yourself with snow chains.  And know how to put them on !  At night, under difficult conditions, the exercise quickly becomes complicated…

7. Prepare yourself physically

In order to take full advantage of your holiday, be in good shape.  A few weeks before leaving, take up a physical activity, even if it is a light one.  Work on your breathing in order to be at ease at high altitude.  Strengthen your thighs for easier descents, pay attention to what you eat…and you will be able to take full advantage of your vacation from the very first day !
